In the middle of a selection of photographs of brilliant and evocative works by Parker is an image of a doll cut in half by the guillotine said to have beheaded Marie Antoinette (currently in the collection of Madame Tussauds’s London “Chamber of Horrors”). The French Revolution is a recurrent topic in the collection, as is the memory of decapitation. A medievalist may be forgiven for a certain comfort with the abstracting of symbolic meanings from blood and body parts, but it may be worth hesitating before this celebration of gory murder, this erasure of the abject horror involved in displaying a human head as an object. This kind of paralleling of human destruction and vandalism, along with a rather too-quick enthusiasm for the promise of violence, is evident in William Tronzo’s introduction, where an illustration of Henry Fuseli’s well-known The Artist Overwhelmed by the Grandeur of Antique Ruins (1778–79) faces Villeneuve’s 1793 engraving showing the amputated head of Louis XVI lifted by its hair, while drops of royal blood drip down to words (themselves suggesting a fantasy of sanguinary fecundity) taken from the recently composed Marseillaise, “May a tainted blood drench our furrows.” Tronzo finds in the two images contrasting modalities of the fragment: “received and created, oppressive and liberating, past and future” (1). At several junctures I found myself wishing that there had been more hesitation before relating the “reign of the guillotine” (an odd euphemism for revolutionary murder) to the destruction or mutilation of monuments. In an excellent essay about attempts to reimagine and de-(or re-)restore the Laocoön in the revolutionary period, Brigitte Bourgeois cites Linda Nochlin (whose work is an important influence in the collection) on the pulverization of tradition represented by the fragment: “Whether a matter of human being, subjected to the reign of the guillotine, or artistic monuments, destroyed or mutilated by revolutionary vandalism, the theme of amputation, which could make the errors and infamies of the past disappear, is omnipresent” (64). The damaged human body has provided an inexhaustible repository of cultural emblems, and it does so in this collection in ways surprising and subtle, predictable and disturbing. In recognition of this difference, the volume is divided into two parts, “Received” and “Created.” Still, reflecting its origin as a symposium held at the Getty Center in 2006, there is no central governing principle connecting the essays, so much as a set of unexpected continuities and intriguing contrasts. Of course to not finish something because one never planned to is quite different from breaking something, or, more to the point, from finding something broken and using it as the basis for reconstructing the lost whole. What is the meaning of the guillotine? The question crossed my mind as I read through the material that makes up this heterogeneous yet fascinating volume, along with some others: What is the ethical weight of dismemberment? How much of pain and loss survives in the remains of broken things, how much of a thrilling sense of freedom? The Fragment: An Incomplete History, which contains ten essays written by scholars of art history, archaeology, literature, philosophy, psychology, numismatics, topography, and film, with one contribution by the artist Cornelia Parker, provokes such questions. I was going to COMPLETELY reprogram Will she was going to be a totally different person after I was done with her. It was only leading up to the real hypnotic mind control sessions that would soon follow. I was only blowing the horn at Will to be sure she went into a trance. Will didn’t suspect anything I watched amazed as Susan did everything I told her to do and yet she acted like a free thinking person in control of her own attacks, yet she was still doing what I told her she lured Will right into a trance because I blow Will into a trance right after Will was comfortable and didn’t suspect anything was about to happen. Normal enough to fool Will, Susan attack just like her old self even tho she was completely mindless and hypnotized. I had a perfect plan for the perfect girl and soon she would be mine once again! Just to be sure this when like I planed I began to hypnotize Sudan to obey me without question! For the last 2 hours before Will got home I did nothing but hypnotism sessions with Susan and it did evolve physical reprogramming! But it was well worth it all and soon I was totally convinced that she was ready to obey completely and would not hesitate when I ordered her to do something! About the time I finished off Susan, Will finally appeared Susan had hardly had time to redress herself, before Will got home, it was just enough time tho to make everything appear normal. I knew this was the best chance to get her into a trance then I could deepen my hold over her later with hypnotic mind sessions later. I wasn’t able to chance hypnotizing Will myself only for her to pretend to be hypnotized. All I needed Susan for was to fool Will just long enough to use the Horn of Hypnos on her with. I knew whenever Will finally appeared that she was smart enough to notice any difference in her mother’s personality, but it wouldn’t matter if I made my move it the right time I could hypnotize Will if I could get to her quickly enough. Susan had a strong will of her own and I actually had to try a little to get her into a trance, but once I had her deep enough she wasn’t any trouble have I was able to force her to give her perfect body to me for a few hours while we waited for Will who want still at Sheffield Institute. I started hypnotizing her the minute she let me inside her home. All I had to do was use my own mind abilities on her and she was in a total trance she couldn’t resist anything I told her after I posed as a Mail Postmen I was able to fool her in actually inviting me into her home. it only look me a few minutes to hypnotize Susan I didn’t have to use it on her either. It was Susan’s body yes it’s clear where Will get her looks from. All the power of the guardians and perfect body at the same time and that PERFECT body meant more to me then my own life! I was willing therefore to use Will's own family to get her and capturing Susan had it's benfits as well, that I could use ALONG with Will. SHE WAS ALSO MY ULTIMATE OBSESSION AND WITH SUSAN I WOULD HAVE EVERYTHING I WOULD EVER NEED IN MY HANDS. it's the MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION OF ALL, and the answer is the most important answer of all it has world changing implications in fact, because the reason why I needed to hypnotize Susan or wanted to, was so I could capture her, the daughter of Susan Vandom was none other then Will Vandom, she was the guardian leader, she had powers beyond belief and she could very well take over any planet she damn well wanted to, however Will wasn't in it for that she was "pure". Now you might also ask why I would want to hypnotize Susan in the first place, well that is the more important question. Betray her to me! You might ask how any mother could do that well it's simple I was going to hypnotize her! I had high level of hypnotic abilities that none had even come close to resisting, but if that was not good enough I had with me the ulimate mind weapon. Susan Vandom didn't know it at the time, but soon she was going to betray her our daughter. The game isn’t that hard once you get used to it. Getting one or two good ones isn’t going to be as good as seven mediocre ones. At the very end, be sure to use up all your remaining arrows. Perfect shots will give you 100 points, and close shots will give you 60 points. One trick you can do is align yourself vertically with one as best as possible, then just keep shooting and slowly easing the analog stick left to repeatedly hit the target. Owen, who had owned and operated textile mills in Lanark, Scotland, headed to the United States in 1825 to launch an experimental community in New Harmony, Indiana. READ MORE: Five 19th-Century Utopian Communities in the United States While Saint-Simon argued for a system where the state controls production and distribution for the benefit of all society’s members, both Fourier and Owen (in France and Britain, respectively) proposed systems based on small collective communities, not a centralized state. The city was designed to give "greater physical, moral, and intellectual advantages to every individual." Įarly socialists like Henri de Saint-Simon, Robert Owen and Charles Fourier offered up their own models for social organization based on cooperation rather than competition. Sketch of a city plan for a new community in Indiana, based on the principles advocated by Robert Owen, a socialist philanthropist. In its emphasis on public ownership of the means of production, socialism contrasted sharply with capitalism, which is based around a free market system and private ownership. It presented an alternative, aimed at improving the lot of the working class and creating a more egalitarian society. Socialism emerged as a response to the expanding capitalist system. READ MORE: The Original Luddites Raged Against the Machine of the Industrial Revolution Factory owners became wealthy, while many workers lived in increasing poverty, laboring for long hours under difficult and sometimes dangerous conditions. In the late 18th century, the invention of the steam engine powered the Industrial Revolution, which brought sweeping economic and social change first to Great Britain, then to the rest of the world. In 16th-century England, Thomas More drew on Platonic ideals for his Utopia, an imaginary island where money has been abolished and people live and work communally. 2017.The intellectual roots of socialism go back at least as far as ancient Greek times, when the philosopher Plato depicted a type of collective society in his dialog, Republic (360 B.C.). "Mass production." World Book Student, World Book, 2017, Accessed 26 Nov. Mass production led to the division-of-labor system, in which each worker is skilled in a single operation. The task must be done in a certain length of time, and with exactness, because the work of the entire line is stopped if it is necessary to halt the moving chain. As the car moves slowly along the line, each worker does a special task. Workers are stationed along the chain in an assembly line. This belt consists of a chain that moves along the floor of the factory. After the automobile parts are made, the automobile frame is attached to a conveyor belt. In the early 1900's, Henry Ford originated the moving assembly line for manufacturing automobiles. The institute studies and sets up standards of quality and methods of interchangeability for mass-produced parts in most U.S. In 1918, five engineering societies established what is now the American National Standards Institute, Inc. He had spent about two years developing machine tools that made identical parts. In this way, Whitney demonstrated the basis of mass production-the interchangeability of parts. Then he assembled 10 muskets from the pieces, showing that anyone could do this if the parts were identical. In front of a board of experts, Whitney placed 10 musket barrels, 10 stocks, 10 triggers, and so on, in separate piles. He was called to Washington to explain the delay. In 1798, the government hired the inventor Eli Whitney to make 10,000 muskets in two years. Until that time, gunsmiths started a second gun only after they had completed the first one. Mass production began in 1800, when the United States was building up its army. It also means that a replacement can be obtained for any part of a manufacturing machine or other product that breaks down. Mass production makes it possible to manufacture things faster, and often at less cost.
